ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- April 22nd through 24th, 2012

For my events in the Anchorage area, I'll be staying with my friend Yvonne (yes, the Yvonne from the book, who is still amazing). She lives an hour north of Anchorage in a town called Wasilla, where Sarah Palin comes from. In fact, Yvonne was in an aerobics class with Sarah Palin a few years ago. It's not a huge town.

Yvonne's house in Wasilla overlooks the Chugach Range.

Have you ever seen a pink mountain?

Pioneer Peak. The alpine glow at sunset makes the snow blush.

We went for a walk and saw wildlife --

a red fox, a dead moose, and this porcupine who climbed a tree to watch us.

Hmmmm -- a book riding a fish.

Yvonne's 13-pound rabbit George checks my flyers.

George will eat anything.

The Palmer musk ox farm. They are well-cared for.

Their fur makes qiviut, the world's warmest wool.

This baby is only two days old.

We are the first visitors mama musk ox has allowed to see the baby.

Mama musk ox doesn't trust boys.

The worker thinks we have been allowed this close because we are all women.

Not too steady yet.

Could this baby musk ox be cuter?

The Alaska Trade Center stocks good stuff.

My book is in excellent company.

Events in Palmer and Anchorage on the same day.

An old coal mining train north of Anchorage.

It has been a long time since I climbed aboard an abandoned Alaska train.

Talking about writing

Speaking to the 49Writers at the Great Harvest Bread Company in Anchorage, a welcoming venue.

Yupik dolls dancing and catching fish.

A "Sumner Company" house with a view.

Yvonne's family business is building quality homes in the Mat-Su Valley around Wasilla.

Yvonne and I climb Bodenberg Butte (the bump).

The view from near the top.

Time to leave Wasilla.
IMG_2436.jpg
The book tour becomes a road trip as I prepare to drive north, first Talkeetna then on to FAIRBANKS.

Must watch out for locals.
