120 miles north of Anchorage, I arrive in TALKEETNA.
Its proximity to Denali (McKinley) and the other peaks of the Alaska Range make it a popular place for visitors
and mountain climbers.
Beautiful Downtown Talkeetna. |

Groceries, beer, and caribou burgers. |
The Talkeetna Library. |
|
In summer, the library can get up to 1,000 people a day even though the town's population is 800. |
My book event at the Talkeetna Library. |

The mountains are close here. |

The south side of Denali (McKinley), 20,320 feet tall. |
I'm staying here at the Susitna Lodge by the river |

This peak is Mt Foraker, 17,400 feet. |
Talkeetna is 120 miles north of Anchorage and 16 miles off the Talkeetna
Spur Road. This road ends at the town, and it has a very end-of-the-road feel to this little town. In my room at the lodge,
there is a binder of information. The first thing in the stack is a "BEAR AWARE" flyer that advises "Avoid
eye contact" and "DON'T RUN!" Underneath the bear info is a flyer with a biker dude riding
a Harley Davidson that says "Motorcyclists for Christ." This is definitely a town of ecclectic tastes.
Scenic flights over the mountains are popular. |

Susitna lodge cabins. |

The birch trees are budding. Spring is coming fast. |
